It's Easter Sunday, and all around the world Christians are saying, "He is risen." "He's alive!" But did Jesus physically rise from the dead in history? Because if it’s only symbolic, Christianity becomes inspiration. If it is physical, then it becomes intervention. The Historical Case (why people take it seriously) Most scholars—even many who aren’t Christians—agree on a few core facts: 1. Jesus was crucified and died • Public execution under Roman authority • Extremely unlikely anyone survived crucifixion 2. The tomb was found empty (early claim) • Reported very early • Women as first witnesses (not a “made up” detail in that culture) 3. People believed they saw the risen Jesus • Individuals and groups • Including skeptic’s like James (Jesus’ brother) • And opponents like Paul 4. The disciples were transformed • From fearful → bold • Proclaimed resurrection in the same city where Jesus died • Many suffered/died for that belief The key question: What best explains those facts? ? They made it up ? • Doesn’t explain willingness to suffer and die • Gains them no power, wealth, or safety ? They hallucinated? • Hallucinations are: • Individual, not group experiences • Don’t explain the empty tomb ? Legend developed over time? • Resurrection belief appears very early (within years, not centuries) The resurrection claim itself… The claim is not vague or mystical. It’s specific: Jesus was bodily raised—recognisable, physical, yet transformed. That’s why early Christians insisted on: • eating with Him • touching Him • seeing wounds Why it matters (this is the real reason to wrestle with it) If Jesus physically rose: 1. Death is not the end • Not just philosophically—but historically broken 2. Jesus is who He claimed to be • Not just teacher • Not just prophet • But Lord 3. Forgiveness isn’t just hoped for—it’s secured The cross = payment The resurrection = confirmation 4. Hope becomes concrete, not abstract Not “things will work out” But: Something has already happened that changes everything. Instead of asking: Can I prove this beyond all doubt? Ask: What explanation best fits the evidence—and the kind of world we live in? And maybe even: If this were true… what would it mean for me?
