I don’t know about you, but few topics stir up as much energy—and confusion—in the church as spiritual gifts. Are they real? Are they rare? Are they… superpowers? Recently I read a book that brought some much-needed clarity and conviction. It’s called Seamless by Chase Stancle—and it completely reframes how we talk about spiritual gifts in the local church. Joseph Seger wrote a reflection on it because he thinks this book offers a better conversation—one that’s deeply rooted in Scripture and centers on something we sometimes overlook: love and unity in the Body of Christ. Here’s a line from the book that’s still sitting with him: “Your spiritual gift will only work fully if you are in loving fellowship with other believers.” That one sentence reshaped how he thinks about the Spirit’s presence in our church—and how we disciple people into their calling. In this book review, he also walks through: - Why the “superhero” approach to spiritual gifts is doing more harm than good - A fresh way to understand the gifts (heart, hands, mind, and soul) - What real evangelism looks like when it flows from love
